An outdoor kitchen island that needs no wall

A BBQ island is one freestanding run that does the whole job: prep at the sink, cook at the grill, gas and utensils underneath. Because it stands alone, it also works on a deck where there is no wall to build against — and you can walk all the way round it.

Stand-alone stainless steel BBQ island with sink module on the left and a built-in grill in the centre, white fronts, on a timber deck

Left

Sink module. 800 mm. The working end — everything lands here first, so it sits nearest the door in most builds.

Centre

Oven bay. 800 mm standard, or 1,182 mm for a wider appliance. Fascia vented, opening cut to your cut-out drawing.

Right

Storage and gas. Drawers for tools, a vented cabinet for the cylinder, an end panel to close the run.

What is in the standard island

Four modules, five widths

This is the mix we quote most often at three metres. Every line can be swapped for a different module at the same height and depth.

i Widths add up exactly. Because every module shares one height and one depth, a run is arithmetic, not carpentry. If your wall gives you 3,000 mm, drop the 400 mm bookend and you are at 2,820 mm with 180 mm of breathing room.

Four details that decide whether it lasts

Nothing here is cosmetic

Factory drawing of the HW-03 grill cabinet, 1,182 × 643 × 900 mm — isometric view as supplied

01 · The fascia is vented, not solid

A grill in a sealed box bakes its own cabinet. The front panel under the grill is machined with ventilation slots at the factory, so the firebox has somewhere to breathe and the module behind it stays below cooking temperature.

02 · The top rail carries the counter, not the doors

The counter sits on a continuous top rail around all four sides. That load path means the doors never carry weight, so they do not drop or rub as the run settles.

03 · Joints are mechanical, not glued

Modules bolt to each other through the side panels. Nothing relies on adhesive outdoors, so a joint that works loose can be re-tightened instead of replaced.

04 · It stands on castors that adjust

Every module arrives on levelling castors. On a deck that is not perfectly flat — which is most decks — you level the run on the castors rather than shimming under it.

What you can change

Change anything on the face. Keep the grid.

The one thing we will not change is the shared height and depth, because that is what makes the modules joinable. Widths, door styles, internal fit-out, colour and the grill opening are all yours to specify.

Same grid, three briefs

How the same island changes with your yard

These are real client briefs, not marketing variations. The modules change; the height and depth never do.

Compact version of the island on a balcony

A · 2.4 m balcony

Sink + grill, nothing else

Lose the drawers, keep the sink and grill. The gas cylinder moves into the grill cabinet's own vented recess. This is the version for apartments and townhouses where depth is tight but you still want a real sink.

Island with integrated fridge module

B · 3.6 m with cold storage

Sink + grill + fridge

Swaps the drawer module for an 900 mm fridge housing. Best under a roof or pergola; in full sun the fridge works harder and we will say so before you order it.

Island with side burner and wine storage

C · 4.0 m entertaining

Sink + grill + side burner + bar

Adds the side burner module for pots and a raised bar return on the outside face. The one layout where we strongly recommend the stainless worktop over stone — the bar takes knocks.

FAQ

BBQ island questions

Can an island sit completely freestanding?

Yes. Nothing needs to be fixed to a wall — the modules bolt to each other and stand on their own castors. On an exposed deck we do recommend an anchor kit for wind, and we will say whether your site needs it once we see the location.

Do I need to walk round it, or can it back onto something?

Both work. The back face is finished, so it can stand in open space or back up against a fence, planter or pool fence. If it backs onto a wall, the same island becomes the straight run, which is a little cheaper because you skip the rear panel treatment.

Where does the gas cylinder go?

Into a vented module — either the grill cabinet's recess or a dedicated gas cabinet (HW-02 / HW-03). It must be ventilated at the bottom, so we never put a cylinder in a sealed drawer or closed box.

Can I add modules later?

That is the point of the grid. Because every module is 900 × 656, a module bought next year still lines up. The caveat is colour: coating is matched in batches, so a later addition can be a shade off in strong light. Ordering the whole footprint at once avoids it.

What does a 3 m island roughly cost, all in?

We do not publish a number, because the grill opening, worktop choice and freight swing it by more than the cabinets do. Send the layout and the destination and you get one figure with the worktop and freight shown as separate lines, valid 15 days.
