Grill fitting

Ninety-eight guides on the part of an outdoor kitchen that cannot be corrected later. Almost everything here comes down to one measurement — the cut-out — and four things that go wrong after it fits.

The short answer

A grill fits a cabinet when its cut-out opening, not its outside width, is smaller than the cabinet's aperture. Three numbers decide it: the cut-out width, the cut-out depth, and the clearance the lid needs above the counter line. Gas entry side decides where the cabinet can sit in the run.

If you have those three numbers you can order today. If you do not, the guide below on measuring a grill for a cut-out takes about ten minutes with a tape.

The full list

Newest first. Every guide answers one question; none of them is a list of "mistakes to avoid".

Do I need to vent a grill cabinet?

Yes — always, and in the fascia rather than the top. Gas is heavier than air, so a vent at the top of the box does nothing for a leaking cylinder.

How to measure a grill for a cabinet cut-out

Inside the aperture, from the drip tray face, and not across the lid. The three numbers a fabricator needs and the two that will confuse them.

The cut-out is too big — can it be fixed?

Usually, with a stainless surround flange rather than a new cabinet. The three fixes in order of cost, and when none of them is acceptable.

Gas entry on the left or the right

It decides where the grill sits in the run, and it is not reversible after the cabinet is cut. How to read it off the grill, and what to do about a hose that is too short.

Your grill is not on any cut-out list

The three documents that let a fabricator cut to an unlisted model, and why the manufacturer's drawing always beats your own measurement.

Lid clearance under a pergola or window

An open lid is roughly 550 mm taller than a closed one. What that does to a low pergola, a servery window and a wall cabinet.

Built-in or drop-in — which grill suits a cabinet

A drop-in sits in a hole and needs support at four points. A built-in carries its own frame. The cabinet is cut differently for each.

Putting a kamado in a cabinet

Ceramic is heavy, the lid hinges upward and the base gets hot. The three things a kamado needs that a gas grill does not.

Can a grill cabinet sit on castors?

Yes, and ours do. What changes: the gas hose needs a service loop, and the whole run needs chocking on a slope.

Installation

Before you read the guides

Settle these in this order

These are the decisions the guides below keep returning to. Settle them roughly first; the articles then fill in the detail.

  1. The grill's own drawing, not its outside width

Every appliance has an aperture dimension and an overall dimension. The cabinet is cut to the aperture; the overall size only tells you how much room the lid needs.

  2. Lid clearance, including the swing

A lid that lifts and rolls back needs height behind the hinge line. Under a roof or against a wall, that is the measurement that fails first.

  3. The gas entry side

Left or right is decided by the grill, and it fixes where the bottle cabinet goes. After the modules are bolted together it cannot be changed without rebuilding the run.

  4. Where the heat leaves the bay

The fascia is vented at the factory. A grill in a sealed bay heats the cabinet around it, and the appliance's own clearance figures assume air can move.

  5. The bottle

The grill cabinet takes up to a 4 litre bottle inside it. A 10 litre bottle belongs in the gas cabinet, which wants to be next to the grill and the side burner.

Straight answers

Questions this section gets most

If the answer you need is not here, the enquiry form asks for the grill model and the run length and nothing else.

What if my grill is not on anyone's cut-out list?

Send the model and the manufacturer's drawing. We cut to the drawing rather than to a list, and if there is no drawing we ask for the four measurements in the measuring guide.

Can the aperture be cut after delivery?

Not cleanly. The fascia is cut, vented and finished at the factory; cutting on site leaves an unfinished edge and usually voids the vent arrangement.

Which cabinet takes the grill?

HW-03, 1,182 × 643 × 900 mm. It is the only appliance bay in the range and the only module with a different depth.

Save the reading

Tell us the grill. We will tell you the cabinet.

One field, then a configuration and a price. If your grill is one we have not cut for, we will ask for the manufacturer's drawing rather than guess at it.
